Ambler Rec Weight Room Specialist – Student Hourly Job Opportunity

Looking for a part time internship for students this summer? KU Recreation Services is currently hiring Weight Room Specialists at the Ambler Student Recreation Fitness Center. This opportunity is ideal for students who want hands-on experience in fitness, wellness, and facility management while earning income during the school year or summer.

Job Description
As a Weight Room Specialist, you’ll be responsible for ensuring a safe and welcoming workout environment in the Cardiovascular/Resistance Training (CRT) areas. Duties include:

  • Risk Management (50%)
    • Monitor equipment and patrons to reduce the risk of injury or damage.
    • Enforce gym policies and procedures.
    • Spot lifts, assist with proper form, and maintain safety protocols.
    • Obtain/maintain CPR/AED certification.
  • Cleaning Responsibilities (25%)
    • Replenish towel stations and disinfectant bottles.
    • Perform hourly cleaning of cardio and resistance equipment.
    • Keep weights, dumbbells, and accessories organized.
  • Customer Service (15%)
    • Help patrons learn proper use of equipment.
    • Answer questions about exercises for different muscle groups.
    • Assist with locker use and provide facility support.
  • Other Duties (10%)
    • Substitute shifts when available.
    • Report maintenance needs.
    • Complete incident/accident reports.
    • Attend staff meetings and trainings.

Required Qualifications

  • Experience with cardio and resistance training equipment (free weights, plate-loaded, selectorized machines).
  • Strong communication skills (verbal and written).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior experience in a recreation center, health club, or gym setting.
  • Related majors such as Exercise Science, Kinesiology, Health, or similar.
  • A self-starter with initiative.

Position Requirements

  • Must be enrolled in at least 6 credit hours during the semester of employment.
  • Summer employment requires prior or upcoming enrollment.
